Color Your World!
Bridget created all of the beautiful mandalas featured on our labels freehand and with black ink on white paper! Her amazing artwork was the absolute inspiration for Mandala Moon Candle Co. and for creating our entire 23-candle collection!
In the beginning, we knew we needed to take her black & white drawings and add color. We knew the process needed to be done with intention and purpose around the color, candle name, scents and stones.
Where did our color inspiration come from? Read On . . .
Thankfully, Bridget has always been drawn to putting things in rainbow order, so sitting with each black & white mandala art file to determine which color best fit the art was a gratifying, yet sometimes challenging, process. We worked together, one candle at a time, to carefully select a beautiful shade of color for each individual candle.
Like Bridget, I have always been attracted to seeing things in rainbow order. I worked in our family thrift store business for over 30 years, and one of the things we were known for was organizing our entire store from the clothing to shoes, books, glassware, jewelry and more all in a specific color order. A refreshing approach to the thrift store experience!
My cousin, Ashley, was the Art Director for our thrift business for over 28 years. Through our creative niche marketing, Ashley introduced us all to the glorious and colorful world of Pantone.
Ashley now owns her own business, House Candy Home. She is a Master Color Consultant and offers interior design and award-winning home stagging in the Santa Cruz area and beyond! Ashley provides helpful design and color tips on her social media accounts so be sure to follow her on Instagram and Facebook @housecandyhome House Candy Home
There is just something calming and exciting about seeing things organized by color. We have always been inspired by the fruit & vegetable stands, and flower displays at farmer’s markets! Oh, and of course the beautiful tulip fields in Skagit Valley, WA! Have you ever been to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival? If not, be sure to add that to your bucket list! It takes place every year during the month of April.
Speaking of flowers and plants, Bridget has been studying Ayurvedic medicine for several years, and talk about color! WOW! The natural colors found in herbs, flowers and plants are beyond inspiring - they are fascinating! Bridget worked with her fellow ‘herbies’ to create this beautiful herbal mandala . . . all those brilliant colors in this magnificent art piece!
Artists inspire us always! Local Sacramento area artist, Tim Collom, uses vibrant colors in his fabulous paintings. And well-known Northwest artist, Dale Chihuly, absolutely takes our breath away with his stunning fine art glass artwork. Unreal!
Some companies inspire us with all of the beautiful color selections, as well as their product names. Great companies like glassybaby and OPI nail lacquers for their clever, often hysterically funny, product names! We loved naming all of our candles and many have special meaning behind their name. We like to think our candles have their own, individual personalities and must therefore have appropriate names to match.
Music, one of the great inspirations of all! There are so many songs are written about various colors, but the below lyrics written by Jett Beres from Sister Hazel in the song, ‘Mandolin Moon’, make us smile huge:
“I’m tasting colors and I’m seeing sounds”
Lyrics By Jett Beres, Sister Hazel, ‘Mandolin Moon’
Mandolin Moon by Sister Hazel
These fun lyrics are about that ‘out of this world’, intoxicating feeling you get when you are absolutely head-or-heels crazy about someone awesome!
Honestly, we believe it just might be possible to taste and smell colors! Seriously!
We love Sister Hazel! In fact, “Hazelnut Song’ is the name of our medium brown candle which is a nod to this great Gainesville-based band and the remarkable community that surrounds them - ‘Hazelnuts’.
And we would be remiss if we did not mention the colorful umbrella canopy in art park in Downtown Auburn, CA!
So go ahead . . . Color Your World!
We have an entire rainbow of candles for you to see, smell and experience!
Since, it is not possible (yet) to scratch & sniff your computer screen, we have added mood photos to all of our candle descriptions in our online shop in hopes that you can almost smell them! If you want to get a deeper vibe of our candles, you may want to visit our Mandala Moon Candle Co. Pinterest account as we have a created a ‘mood board’ for each one of our candles. For us, it’s all about the feels! Mandala Moon Candle Co. Moon Boards
RAINBOW . . . Dash of Sunlight and Drops of Water
“Two things are needed, raindrops and the sun. The raindrops act like tiny prisms. As the sun's rays enter a raindrop, some of the light is reflected back. The rest of the light is refracted into the water. The refracted light is spread into the spectrum of colors. As the different wavelengths of light reach the back of the raindrop some are refracted out of the raindrop. The rest of the light is reflected back into the water. Finally the light is refracted into the air. There are millions of these tiny prisms during a rain storm. Together they make a rainbow.”
